ORGANIC FARMSTAY

We have called the cottage a Bed and Breakfast/Farmstay because we are so close to Taumarunui that some people just want to stay the one night. Others however like to stay longer and enjoy the country lifestyle.

With that in mind we have a discount rate depending on how long the stay and how many people. I have listed a few activities that may appeal but please remember that this is a working farm therefore sometimes you just can’t go wandering over the hills eg. during lambing. We always have plenty of pet calves/lambs to feed anyway.

On the Farm – There is always something happening on the farm. Shearing, crutching, drenching, docking, hay making, lambing, always moving stock, the list goes on!

You are most welcome to join in although you must remember that JOHN IS THE BOSS!

Around the Farmyard – This is great for the kids. Real hands-on. We have... hens, roosters, chickens, horses, a very friendly Jersey cow, calves, lambs, goats, cats, dogs, fish, laughing doves, a VERY LARGE Kune Kune pig called Matilda, and anything else I can get my hands on … turkeys, geese. All the animals are extremely quiet and friendly for the children.

Walking –there is 700 acres to wander over with exceptional views of the three mountains, Mt. Ruapehu, Mt. Ngauruhoe and Mt. Tongariro.

We can arrange for you to enjoy PRIVATE BUSH WALKS and there are wonderful free walks in and around the area of Taumarunui.

Swimming – We are lucky enough to have a fantastic river running through our property called the Taringamotu Stream. Of course we have our favourite swimming hole that is so private that even we forget where it is sometimes! Summer is the best time to visit when the water is warm.

Mountain-biking – This sport has become very popular in N.Z so we allow mountain-bikers through part of our property. We don’t have proper biking tracks yet so it is entirely up to you where you go, we will give you a few directions though, OH! and you have to bring your own bikes!

Relaxation – often guest just want to sit and relax, enjoy the peace and quiet, read a book, soak up the atmosphere and rejuvenate the spirit. We will show you where and leave you to it.

Fishing – In the Taringamotu River that runs through the property are Rainbow Trout. Try your hand at Fly fishing and I might even cook it for you. The season for the rivers is from 1 Oct to the 30th April. You will need a local fishing license for rivers which is $18 per day and can be purchased at THE BIG OUTDOORS EXPERIENCE in Taumarunui. We have some spare rods and John can give you a few tips.

Eeling is a must for the kids, they haven’t lived until they have caught a wiggly eel.

Star-gazing, this area is known for its clear air so the stars are so close you can touch them.

Bonfires and BBQ’s A must in the summer, down at the river, cooking sausages on a stick, Yum!

Opossum and Rabbit shooting John is a licensed gun holder and often goes out for a shoot at night to keep the numbers down. If you are into blood sport this is about as close as you will get.

Golf – Because the Tarrangower Golf Course is just over the back fence we have our own private driving range in the front paddock. There is nowhere else close enough for the golfers to get there eye in before playing so we have a definite advantage. John is a golfing nut so he will always join you!

Photography –This seems rather a strange activity to mention as you will probably be taking heaps of photos anyway but I thought you would like to know we have a USB port for any digitals on our computer so you can email photos straight away and make your friends jealous.

Bird watching – We have plenty of native birds on the farm and in the bush, Tui, Bellbirds, Wood Pigeons, and Pukekos etc. Then there are the Sky larks, Oyster catchers, swallows etc.

Duck shooting – For Greys and Mallards the season starts first weekend in May and goes till July. There is a special season for Paradise ducks which are becoming a bit of a pest...Feb– Sept. There is a flock of geese on the farm that we thin out now and again and we can always arrange a Turkey Shoot. We also have pheasant and pukekos but don’t usually kill these.
